It's almost time to say Adios

Friday is our last day of school and I will be saying goodbye to my little kiddos---it's going to be a very hard day.  Can you imagine saying goodbye, or as I prefer "see you later," to these bundles of joy you have spent a year with? Ahhhhh!  Friday is a celebration for everyone, so we have school activities planned and individual classroom parties--the Nursery party will be food and juice, games, possible a short movie, and a goody bag (I got them all mini tambourines since it's something we use in our classroom daily, candy, and I made their individual picture with me into a frame!)  I am going to miss them so much--but I am hoping to visit Honduras again within 5 years to see them all grown up!

Saturday morning Kiley and I are taking off for one last adventure--to Antigua, Guatemala.  We have been to Guatemala before, but we only got to enjoy a meal there, and don't feel as though we spent enough time there.  Some of the other girls have been to Antigua before, and it looks beautiful!  We are going to head there Saturday and return to Gracias Wednesday afternoon.  The next day, is the big day, my return to AMERICA!  Kiley and I will arrive into CO around 10pm Thursday--I will then again have my wonderful cell phone so I can be in much better contact with everyone :)

Prayers for all of the American teachers leaving Honduras is just over a week--and for the students, as this is something they face each year; saying goodbye to yet another teacher they bonded with over the year.  It is not going to be an easy goodbye, that is for sure!  Prayers for safe travels as well, and I will probably blog one last time after this about my adventure in Antigua, and my return to the States!

Dos mas semanas...

It is so crazy that I am only here for a little more than two weeks now!  It will be very sad to leave, but I am excited for starting my new job in Arizona.  I leave Honduras on June 14th and head to Colorado with Kiley until the 19th.  I'll go to AZ for a few days, then head to MI on the 23rd until the 1st with my family, and then school stuff begins July 2nd for new hires.  WOW! I feel as though I don't really get any kind of a break, but I am still very excited for it all!

Last Sunday after house church Louis took us on an adventure on his property, which was beautiful!  We hiked a bit to a small but beautiful waterfall, and then we climb through a ton of caves that are also on his property!  It was a beautiful morning we all spent together.

Kiley, Stacey and I also went to the dentist last week to get our teeth cleaned.  I'd like to say I don't have any cavities, but I can't, ha! But it definitely felt good to have a cleaning and the doctor did very good!

We finished our Spanish tutoring with Lordes last week, so we took her out to dinner last week at a nice restaurant.  While I still wish my Spanish was a lot better than it is, I do know I have improved and I have enjoyed spending the time with Lordes.

As many of you know, I went to Africa again last December for a medical mission trip to Sierra Leone.  While I was there I was able to assist in two births, and I also spent a lot of time in different areas of the hospital.  I have always loved babies, and that time in Africa was very special to me and it opened my eyes a lot.  Since having done that there, I have wanted to get a better look at the hospital here, to see the differences and more.   Stacey's roommate Melissa is interning at the hospital in Gracias, and I asked her if I would be able to come in with her one evening and spend time with her in the hospital.  She got permission for me, and Kiley decided to come along, and we were able to go with her to work the other night.  The hospital was a lot cleaner than the one I worked at in Africa, but there were also a lot of similarities.  I got to hold a baby that was born a few hours before we arrived at the hospital; pure joy.  We also helped welcome a new beautiful baby boy into the world; God is so good!

As you can see a lot of exciting things have been going on within the last month here.  I am doing my best to enjoy my last weeks here, remaining in the moments here even though I am excited for all that is to come.  God is continuing to challenge me lately, and I am doing my best to embrace each trial he gives me to refine my faith in Him.  I am strongly leaning into Him for guidance and encouragement, and this verse has been sticking out to me lately. Maybe it's one that will inspire and encourage you now too.

The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:18

Meet the new...

KINDERGARTEN TEACHER AT SYCAMORE ELEMENTARY IN VAIL, ARIZONA!!!!!!!

I recently accepted this offer, and I am very excited to start.

I had to make the sacrifice of not going to MI for the summer or working at my camp because I have to be to school July 2nd for new teacher hires.  It was a hard sacrifice to make, as I was beyond excited for everything that was going to be happening this summer in MI, but I knew I couldn't turn down this offer.  The school is actually a year-round school, and my first day of teaching is July 16th.  I am praying I will not still be worn out from this year at this time!  I am visiting MI still for a week before the 2nd, and I hope to see as much family and friends as I can.  I am very blessed for the offer, and I am confident in my decision and feel as though God helped me make the right decision!

Bachelorette Bash!

Now there is less than one month of school left.  Tomorrow makes it exactly one month until I arrive back in the States.  WOW!  The days are slipping by so quickly.  We just finished the letter U, and had a lot of fun learning about such things as Up and Upside down.  My students are so precious.

Saturday was Amy's 23rd birthday, so we threw her a surprise party Friday night at a nice restaurant down the street and enjoyed some good pizza and cake.  She said it was the first time she didn't find out about a surprise party being planned for her-success!  It was a good time with everyone.

Kiley is getting married in October, so I of course knew she needed some kind of bachelorette party in her honor!  We got the girls together and headed to Santa Rosa on Saturday morning for a day and night full of fun and memories!  The other girls walked around the town and went shopping while Stacey and I bought snacks and set up the hotel room for the party.  The girls all came back to the hotel, we surprised Kiley, and the fun began!  We ate snacks and played lots of games in the room, and then we went out to dinner and out for the night.  The bride to be was all smiles all night; another success I'd say!
U is for Upside down!

Throw the balloons...UP!!

Birthday Party!!

Beautiful bride to be!

Notes of encouragement and congratulations!

Game...who can guess what's in Kiley's purse? Pepper spray is one thing of course!

Three words were secretly chosen, bridezilla, wife, and ring...I kept a tally that night of each time she said any of those words...We all pitched in a lempira for each tally for a wedding fund!

Standing on the Mountain of God

WOW! What a weekend it was---but I'll get to that in a minute :)

Last week we had no school on Tuesday, so the ladies at our school all threw a baby shower for both my assistant and Mr. Lara's wife.  We all pitched in helping with decorations, games, and more.  We had the celebration at the private hot springs and we all dressed up for the occasion.  The games were in Spanish but everything went smoothly and both mama's to be were very thankful!  Sonia is due on June 3rd, so I continue to pray that I can meet her little boy before I leave; that'd be very special to me!

This weekend Amy, Kiley, Kristi, Tabitha and I set out to hike Mt. Celaque, to the highest point in Honduas; Cerro Las Minas.  We hired a guide through a hotel here in Gracias, and were given camping supplies as well.  At 5:30am on Saturday we were picked up by a driver who took us about an hour and a half away to San Manuel.  Most people hike the mountain straight up through Gracias and back down the same way, but we decided to go over to San Manuel and hike up and then hike back down through Gracias--we were turning a normal 3-day hike into a 2-day hike.  We were greeted in San Manuel by our guide. Santos, and from there we hiked about 2 (hard) hours to where his family lives.  His mother cooked us breakfast which we had paid for, and it was delicious: coffee, tortillas, eggs, beans, cheese, and spaghetti.

Before we left Gracias Kiley had asked me if my knees were going to be okay from hiking so much (if you don't know I have really bad knees).  I usually associate the pain I get only when running, and I hadn't thought of bringing my brace or anything.  I had a gut feeling I was in for a long trip, and that I was going to have to fully depend on God to get me up and down that mountain.  After breakfast we started our journey to the camp we would be staying at over night, Campamento Quetzal.  Two of the girls decided to take horses up instead of hiking, so we somewhat ended up with 3 guides; Santos, and the two men guiding the horses, as they would be walking back down the mountain after getting us to our campsite.  Our group of girls were encouraging to one another and switching off and on with the backpacks to help one another out.  The hike up was long and rugged and tough, and my knees were in pain from the beginning.  Kiley had cut off her t-shirt sleeves to use as headbands, but we cut them instead the our guides machete and I tied them around my knees to put pressure on the pain.  These were lifesavers for me.  We reached camp at about 4pm.  We hiked down to a spring (not sure if it was an actual spring or still setting water still) and filled our water bottles.  We then set up our two tents while our guide got us a fire ready to cook dinner.  We made hotdogs, spaghetti and baleadas over the fire for dinner.  It was really cold on the mountain, and it soon began to rain, and then hail! It was crazy!  We were all exhausted from the day, so we just sat around the fire playing small games with our guide and then we headed to bed by 6pm, crazy!

We woke up at 5am and made breakfast and cleaned up camp and then headed out for our 2 hour hike up to the tallest peak in Honduras--so exciting!  My one knee was feeling okay, but the other knee was not doing well at all.  But we made it up to the tallest point, 2,849 msnm, and it was indeed gorgeous!  It was definitely worth the rugged and steep hike.  God is good, and His creation is amazing!

We started back down the mountain, and stopped at a "spring" again to fill our waters.  Kristi had this laser light zapper for purifying the water or something that we had used the night before, but this time she couldn't find it right away, so Kiley and I ended up drinking a little of the water from the spring itself.  We then began our 6 or so hour hike down the mountain.  It was slick and slippery from the rain, and there were many unbelievably steep and scary spots.  Also, going down hill on the knees creates even more pressure on the knees and this is what I experienced the entire way down.  My one knee got to the point where I couldn't hardly bend it to even walk, and my right leg was supporting the majority of my weight.  I had to step down a certain way or the pain would be excruciating.  I have never fully depended so much on God, so I am glad I knew that the only way I was getting down that mountain was by His grace and love for me.  You would think I would have become numb to the pain, but I didn't, and the constant pain with each step just got worse and worse over the 6 hours.  I broke down a number of times crying, but I told myself it was okay to cry.  I was determined to make it down, and I kept reminding myself that God is so much bigger than the pain I was feeling.  But WOW, it was mentally, emotionally, and physically exhausting.  My one leg soon began to give out often from so much weight on it, and I was slipping and falling often, but I made it to the bottom of the mountain, and gave all the praise to God.

Kristi's husband Shannon picked us up from the Visitors Center and drove us home.  I can tell you I have never been this sore before, and my knee is still hurting, but it was definitely worth the adventure!  Last night I went to bed feeling very sick and I thought I was going to puke.  I slept it off for about 2 hours, when I woke up and puked 7 more times throughout the night and early morning.  I felt so awful, and I knew I couldn't go to school today.  My body is so exhausted from both the hike and puking, and I hardly have the energy to move.  Kiley ended up coming home from school too, and we are thinking it might be from drinking some of the spring water or something.  Today has been long and lonely, but I am able to keep down gatorade and am hoping to eat something here shortly and keep it down as well.

Our adventure was every bit exciting and every bit worth it, regardless of the struggles we faced throughout it and still face now.  God is good, and I am very thankful we finally conquered Celaque!
